↳ backstory
‣ This is a Post-Endgame canon divergent portrayal of Steve Rogers. When Steve arrives in 2012 New York to return the Mind Stone to Loki’s scepter, his mission goes sideways. He is caught in a Chitauri attack and falls from a collapsing floor of Avengers Tower. The fall shatters his vials of remaining Pym Particles—the only way of continuing the mission and returning to his time. This incident sets off alarm bells at the Time Variance Authority, and a team is sent out to prune Steve’s branch, which is quickly approaching a Nexus Event. However, Mobius has sympathy for Steve and believes that he may be able to help him rectify the situation and avert a crisis.Mobius helps Steve return the remaining Infinity Stones, but the journey begins to affect Steve in unexpected ways. As they move through time and return the Stones, Steve starts to forget things and, eventually, himself. In a panic, Mobius brings Steve back to the TVA in an attempt to refresh his memory, much in the way he does for Loki in Loki: Season 1. However, Steve does not recognize himself.
↳ backstory cont.
At a loss and wracked with guilt, Mobius elects to keep Steve at the TVA, where he remains as an Analyst until the end of the first season of Loki. After the TVA collapses, Mobius returns Steve to his timeline, to Sam and Bucky, hoping that eventually, this will fix whatever happened to his mind within the TVA. [This is the end of the linked fic, and Steve is old; for the purpose of this portrayal, Steve is not Joe Biden coded lmao]Steve’s memory begins to recover, but he feels like a tremendous burden to Sam and Bucky. They don’t often discuss how much time has passed for them since he disappeared (at the end of Endgame) or how it has affected them, but he can sense it in every conversation they have and in how they look at him. It’s too much, and eventually, he returns to Brooklyn, where he lives a quiet, isolated life. Soon after, though, Steve's memories begin to return all at once, and he seeks the help of a powerful telepath who he once heard about through Tony Stark.
